The effect of tramadol and meperidine HCl on C02 response curve

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the respiratory effects produced by tramadol and by, meperidine HCl with new rebreathing method. Ventilatory reponse to CO2 was measured in10 orthopedic patients before and after the intravenous administration of 50mg of tramadol and 50mg of meperidine HCl under the 2 MAC halothane anesthesia.
The mean ventilatory response to C02(Mean¡¾S.D.) decreased after administration of tramadol and meperidine HCI from 1.50¡¾0.15 to 1.41¡¾0.16 and from 1.50¡¾0.25 to 1.03¡¾ 0.14 1 min-1/torr, respectively.
Respiration was more depressed after meperidine HCl than after tramadol.
